Statistics have recently told us that 1 in 100 Americans are incarcerated. The number of women in prison continue to escalate although crime is down. Of the women convicted of violent crimes, the vast majority were convicted for defending themselves or their children from abuse. A large majority were victims of abuse. Im not excusing the criminal acts. However, the trauma of their lives outside of prison continues while they are incarcerated and I feel that it is basically overlooked. Their own sense of personal and suffering is compounded by a system that does not provide the resources to deal with the problem that led to the imprisonment. Most feminist discussion about prison deals with deciding how to deal with men who commit crimes against women. This effect may be hard to imagine but is all too real. This video is dedicated to women in prison.
